Hi Matt,
What I have found with newbies is they get confused about going to different places for domain names, hosting services, trying to figure out what FTP is an the relationship to the site.
So when I am helping someone get started I have them order the domain name and hosting services from one place. Then when they understand things a bit better I tell them about getting names cheaper and setting them up with their site.
In any case that is the way I do it.
Jay
Good call, Jay. For the bundle idea, I like FatCow – you can do hosting and domains from one place, and in my experience, their customer service is awesome. The site abounds with bad puns about cows, which can be either a plus or a minus, depending on your mooood!
sorry, heehee

I’ve just come of name cheap, did not know it existed. So though I know a little about getting domain names and where to get them from, I did not know about this one: I got colinjeffrey.co.uk for a lot less than I got colinjeffrey.com for… at a place I will be transering all my domains from to name cheap… Thanks For this. Colin Jeffrey
Thanks Colin! Be prepared to learn a LOT here at the WPC. You will often see some of our most advanced members and Matt as well, talk about how much they still continue to learn as a result of being part of our community here. It’s a rather dynamic collective knowledge that continually grows, and the more we all learn and continue to share with others, the more we all continually grow and advance towards our business goals.

I hadn’t heard of Name Cheap before – I have always used Cheap-Registrar.com . I like the adding of who-is
I personally use 1and1.co.uk, they do offer free domain names with some of their packages. The biggest problem is that prices vary so much between company to company, you do need to shop around especially if you are in the UK, I’ve seen .co.uk domains being sold for £25 when you can get them for £2,99 a year. One of my pet hates is when a designer registers a domain in their company name for a client, this causes no end of trouble if that company goes bust. I always encourage my clients to register the domain in their own name and address, so that if anything happens to the company they are using to develop their site they can ensure they don’t loose their domain name.
That’s great advise to you clients Ann. You’ll find all of us hear at the WPC strongly advocate keeping all aspects of a any business or web real estate as much in your own control as possible. ~ Jeff
This video very good advise. After reading Ann’s comment and Jeff’s reply, I do think I will do some shopping around. I already have a domain name, but am thinking of changing it. I got it because I was going to do the affilliate thing so went for Links by Lori, but now with the blogging I’m not sure I should keep it. Any advise?
I’ve registered domain names many times, but I decided to watch the video to see if there were any tips that I could use. I had never heard of NameCheap, but I will be checking them out. I’ve discovered that it is beneficial to check out some of the hosting companies because some of them offer a free domain name with a year’s service. It is the same procedure, but it is all done in one place.
I got my hosting with D9 Hosting, which came with a free domain name for the first year. It certainly made things very easy as everything was set up for me. Now that the first year has passed and I know a bit more, I can shop around, if I want to.
What a great video! It is especially empowering for people starting out – a great resource! Thank you. I have never heard of NameCheap. I will be checking that website out, for sure.
I do all my hosting and domain purchasing with http://www.sitelutions.com. I have been with them for years and they have been brilliant to work with. I have created and posted sites from all locations over the world with them; my most challenging was Nigeria, especially with power-outs and bandwidth issues which was a locational issue, nothing to do with Sitelutions at all! In all this time I have only had one short downtime blip with them which they were quick to fix and really on the ball with information and apologies.
Glad I didn’t skip the video. Even though I am very familiar with puchasing domain names your video just goes to show there is always something new to learn. First, never heard of namecheap. I’ll have to check them out. Second, never would have thought to search for coupon codes to save some money when it comes to purchasing domain names. Thanks for the info.
Matt,
Thanks for the video. I especially liked how to find a coupon code to save on the cost of registration…
Hi.. Thought I would check this out since this questions has come up for some of my clients. Regarding Ann’s post i couldn’t agree more. I have seen first hand where hosting companies have packages which include domain names. One company renewed a lapsed domain for a company and after the client was unsatisfied and went in for his refund, he learned he didn’t own this domain name, but he was welcome to have it for $99. Within two weeks it was being advertised as on sale-call for details. Inevitably they replied to my inquiry and the price had changed to $588 but if he purchased it now they could give it to him for as little as $99/year… unbelievable. If you google this domain they are using the previous content they had posted for their customer. It ranks higher than his other domain names, and there is nothing he can do as he already tried the Attorney Generals Office to no avail.
There are many deceptive businesses out there! beware.
Thanks, Diane
Matt,
Thanks for this information. I do have one domain name with a website design co., but am interested in purchasing others for different themes/niches. This looks like an affordable resource. Thanks!
Thanks for the video Matt.
I heard of Namecheap before and I heard lots of IM use this company. Personally I used Godaddy. I am more familiar with them and always have great experience with them. Great customer service with quick response. And from time to time, they offer great coupon discount code. I don’t think there’s any much different in price between Namecheap and Godaddy though.
Thanks for the video. I already have a domain name. But what I got from this video is to always look for any coupon available when buying online. Glad I didn’t bypass this video.

Ditto to the comments already posted! Registering domain names and linking them to my hosting is something I’ve done many times before. So why did I feel I had to watch this video?
As I mentioned in my forum ‘Welcome’ message, I’m a ‘slackademic’ – an eternal student… I’ve learned a lot of stuff, yet haven’t made any significant progress as yet. So I’m here to learn EVERYTHING that Matt has to teach, right from scratch.
What did I learn here? How about that nifty little Coupon Code search? WOW! I currently own 20 domain names, so if I do the math with the .88 cent saving, this information alone is worth $17.60.
I will pass on a little tip: While I purchased my domains at different times, I do SYNCHRONIZE them so that they become due at the same time every couple of years. This way, I get to take advantage of Bulk Rates which can save you even more!
All the best from Toronto,
Russ
I’m diggin your vibe Russ, Looking forward to trying your insane workout.

On this video, I didn’t hear Matt give any reasons for his choice of Namecheap like he justified using WordPress in the previous video. I have over 30 domains registered with Go Daddy and they’ve always given me great service. I like having everything in one cupboard, so to speak, so I might be resistant to change registrars at this point. I’d love to hear Matt’s reasons for selecting Namecheap above all others.
Thanks.
David
I had no idea that name cheap had even existed myself. So is this the cheapest domain name place? I heard that some Domain names can go as low as perhaps about $5.00 or $7.00 a year. I don’t know but I think I might have seen this over the internet somewhere.
At first I thought I already knew what to do to set up a domain name for customers. Boy was I surprised! I like learning about new resources and I would recommend looking at as many videos as you can even if you think you already know what they may be about. Reason? You may learn something new. I know I did. For example, the Name Cheap resource and the search string entry method for Google are awesome.
Enjoy and keep learning!
Denise
This was another concise and to-the-point video.
Even though I was already familiar with purchasing domain names from needing them for websites which I was trying to setup, I watched the video anyway and I am glad I did because I did not know that you could use coupon codes on namecheap. I have almost always used GoDaddy.com, which has some really good specials sometimes, for instance a $2.95 domain charge if you purchase 3 at once recently, and possibly still ongoing. I will have to start comparing prices on the 2 websites!
I really enjoyed finding out the info that you can do a coupon search code on Google.com!
Let’s get BLOGGING!!!
The coupon search idea is gold, love it

I ‘ve bought just a couple of domains so far with coolhandle.com, their support is very good. I heard before about namecheap but hasn’t tried yet. I will try it next since is Matt’s recommendation, even better with a coupon code. thanks Matt
I have close to 100 domains I have purchased over the years and would like to begin building some of them out with WordPress.
I have four different registrars with whom I do business. One thing I’ve learned is not to be totally loyal to one registrar. Find the best deal – with coupon codes and specials – and purchase from the lowest priced offering.
When the time comes, you can host from any hosting service with whom you choose – regardless of registrar.
Best,
Wayne
I have been using GoDaddy and I set up my WP site originally from it. I don’t quite get what an FTP is, although a program I have been trying to use had me download one or IT? So, I am getting an outsiders idea of what an FTP is, is it a brand or are there other brands of FTP? what does FTP stand for? you get the point. I am sure many people are as clueless about what an FTP and purpose for it is, so just a heads up.
On the other issue, and I have just begun to use your site for wp lessons, is the fact that I used GoDaddy. With my Domain Name I got an email address, but have no idea (Ive since forgotten it) or how to use it, much less forward it. on your video about email, you just jump in on going to the host gator cpanel and managing the email. Of course this did not help me. I suppose I need to contact GoDaddy. I wonder how many of the videos are going to be dependent upon my having used HostGator to begin with when I made my first and so far only WP site. Could you comment to me about this? And will I get an email when you do? or do I have to come back to this site to know?
Thanks,
Kate
